THE WALK
Date: 25/12/23
Time: Meet 08:30, Trek starts 09:30
Location: Meet at Castleton Visitor Centre
Car Parking: Castleton Visitor Centre Car Park, Buxton Rd, Castleton S33 8WN
PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY – (Car parking may be limited so it’s important to arrive on time to find alternative parking if needed)
Walk distance/Duration:
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Easy – This is a fairly easy walk suitable for people of all walking abilities. As always, being physially trained will help you enjoy the experience more.
The route is approximately 7 miles and it is expected to take the group 5 hours to complete at a casual pace.
After a short briefing, we shall start the trek at 09:30 sharp.
We will begin by heading towards Mam Tor (1,696ft), our first of 3 summits. On our way we will pass Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern, before heading up a steep ascent towards our first summit and trig point. This is by far the hardest section of the trek. We will continue along the ridge to Bak Tor, enjoying, weather permitting, glorious views to our right and left.
We hope to stop for something to eat on Bak Tor. It also enjoys some fascinating protruding rocks, which make for some amazing pictures. If the weather is nice, we shall be spending a bit of time here. We will then head to the final summit, Lose Hill, again, another great spot to take pictures.
After this walk along the ridge, we shall finally be heading back down to Castleton. The route back will depend on the weather. If it is wet and windy, then we’ll take a direct route back. If it is still and sunny, then a more scenic route will be taken.
